Spring NUSSLHA Event at Northeastern University

1st Annual MS SLP Alumni Panel

The quiet buzz of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) graduate students and alumni at the NU Alumni Center provided a warmth to the room on this grey stormy Saturday morning.

An innovative idea from the current NUSSLHA officers resulted in this excellent event featuring six alumni speaking about their varied career paths in the field of SLP. Tessa Blood, class of 2014, shared her insightful experiences working with high school students at CREST Collaborative. Barb Worth, class of 1993, shared her passionate work with Voice Disorders at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Kristin Gianfalla, class of 2010, presented on her work in the school based setting. She loves storybooks as a medium for therapy and highlighted the role of the SLP as a team member when working with students in the school based setting.

Victoria Littman, class or 2012, shared her innovative work with both inpatient and outpatient adults with Dysphagia at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. Diana Brenner, class of 2014, shared her outpatient hospital based work with bilingual children. Diana specializes in working with toddlers and younger children with communication delays and disorders. She shared the opportunity of being able to work closely with families and physicians in this setting. Brittany Medeiros, class of 2014, shared her clinical path from Early Intervention to working in a Charter School to her current position as a pediatric SLP at Lexington Spaulding. Brittany works with both feeding and speech and language disorders and enjoys the diversity of her caseload. She discussed the fast pace of the outpatient setting and working with complex communication needs.

After the individual presentations, the first and second year MS SLP students had an opportunity to chat with the speakers in break out groups and discuss their interests in the field and future aspirations.  Thanks to the NUSSHLA officers, Yudit Bolotovskaya, Leah Diamant, Leah Burkholder and Emily Manny, for organizing this great event!
